Guizhou entrepreneur Fu Guoyan faces repeated detentions as business nears collapse

Fu Guoyan, chairperson of the Guizhou-based ethnic handicraft company Qian Cui Xing, has faced repeated detentions by authorities, leading to the company's near-collapse. The 37-year-old enterprise, which provided 90% of the exhibits for the Guizhou Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai Expo and produced products used as official state gifts, is currently in a state of near-death due to its leadership's legal troubles.

Fu was detained twice for nine months starting in November 2024 by the Guizhou Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection and Supervision. Following her release, she was again placed under surveillance in April 2026 by police in Cengong County on allegations of "organizing an orgy." Her son, Ma Xianghong, has publicly petitioned the Guizhou Governor, offering to donate all company assets to the government in an attempt to save the livelihoods of nearly 100 employees and tens of thousands of rural embroiderers who rely on the brand.

Ma claims the allegations, including claims that Fu helped conceal 9 million yuan in criminal proceeds, lack physical or bank evidence. The company's operations have significantly declined, with revenue dropping from millions annually to only 440,000 yuan in the first half of 2025.
