Gujarat: 158 refugees to receive Indian citizenship certificates in Ahmedabad

A total of 158 refugees are set to receive Indian citizenship certificates during a ceremony in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The event, organized by the Ahmedabad district administration at the SAL Institute in Sola, will be attended by Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi.

Of the 158 beneficiaries, 126 are receiving citizenship under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), while 32 have been registered through the Collector’s Office. The distribution includes members of minority communities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, following central government notifications that delegated citizenship granting powers to District Collectors.

In a separate announcement, Deputy CM Harsh Sanghavi stated that former Agniveers will be directly recruited into the Gujarat Police force without a written examination, while maintaining a 20 per cent reservation for them. The Ahmedabad district administration noted that between 2017 and 2025, the district has issued citizenship certificates to more than 1,200 applicants.
