Gujarat Advocate General assures Rent Bill will not be signed

Gujarat Advocate General Kamal Trivedi informed the Gujarat High Court that the Gujarat Rent Bill, 2026, will not be signed by the Governor and that the state government intends to restore the original law. These assurances were made following a meeting between the Deputy Chief Minister and members of the Bar Council of Gujarat.

The legal community is currently engaged in a strike, with lawyers across the state abstaining from court work on October 5 and 6. The protest is directed at the provisions of the proposed Bill, which seeks to transfer the adjudication of rent-related disputes from judicial courts to revenue authorities.

Despite the Advocate General's report that assurances were conveyed to the Bar to end the strike, the Gujarat High Court Advocates' Association proceeded with the abstention from proceedings before courts, tribunals, and judicial authorities.
