Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel emphasizes coastal conservation amid climate threats

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has highlighted climate change, rising sea levels, coastal erosion, marine pollution, and plastic waste as major global concerns. Speaking at the closing ceremony of a national conference on ‘Coastal Ecology, Security, and Sustainability’ at Gujarat University in Ahmedabad, Patel emphasized the necessity of balancing economic development with environmental protection and marine biodiversity.

Patel noted that Gujarat’s coastline is a vital driver for development, maritime trade, and livelihoods. He referenced the state’s long maritime history, from the ancient port of Lothal to modern hubs like Mundra and Kandla. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for recognizing the coastline’s potential through the ‘Blue Economy’ policy and the ‘Saptadhara’ vision, which integrates ports, industry, energy, fisheries, and tourism.

The Chief Minister also underscored the ecological importance of mangroves, describing them as a natural shield for coastal villages against cyclones and storms. He stated that protecting coastal ecology is a shared responsibility between the government and society.
