Gujarat court sentences three to life imprisonment for cow slaughter

A sessions court in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar district has sentenced three men to rigorous life imprisonment following a case involving the seizure of 277 kg of beef. The convicts, identified as Vasim Qureshi, Mohammad Rafiq Qureshi, and Asfaq Bahelim, were found guilty under the Gujarat Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

The incident originated from a police raid on August 22, 2024, at a residence in Jamla village. During the operation, authorities recovered 277 kg of beef, weapons used for slaughter, and a vehicle intended for transporting the meat. The prosecution alleged that the accused intended to sell the meat for financial gain.

In delivering the verdict, Additional Sessions Judge B R Rajput cited Hindu scriptures, including the Vedas and the Manusmriti, to highlight the cultural and religious significance of cattle. The court noted the cow's role in traditional prosperity and righteousness. In addition to life imprisonment, the court imposed fines on the convicts, with reports citing amounts of either Rs 2 lakh or Rs 3 lakh each.
