Gujarat doctors extract tooth lodged in adult's airway in two minutes

Doctors at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital in Gujarat successfully removed a tooth that had been lodged in the airway of a 47‑year‑old man from Panchmahal district for about one and a half years. The patient, identified as Balvantbhai, was admitted on July 20, 2026 after a month of persistent coughing and breathing difficulty. Examination revealed the tooth had entered his airway while drinking water.

A multidisciplinary team from the Pulmonary Medicine, ENT, and Anaesthesia departments performed an advanced bronchoscopic procedure on July 23, extracting the tooth in just two minutes without complications. Dr Nalin Shah, head of Pulmonary Medicine, noted the rarity of such a prolonged foreign‑body aspiration in adults, and Dr Rakesh Joshi, the hospital's medical superintendent, highlighted the coordinated use of advanced technology. The patient was discharged the following day in good health.
