Gujarat government announces ₹1,000 crore solar subsidy
The Gujarat government has announced an additional ₹1,000 crore subsidy to encourage the installation of rooftop solar panels. This initiative, approved during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, aims to make solar energy more affordable for low and middle-income families and reduce electricity costs.
The subsidy will supplement the central government’s ‘PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana’. Under the new scheme, for solar systems up to 2kW capacity, the state government will cover the remaining costs after the central subsidy and the beneficiary's required contribution are deducted.
For a 1kW system costing ₹54,000, the central government provides ₹32,400. General category beneficiaries will contribute ₹5,400, receiving an additional ₹16,200 from the state. For SC/ST families, the contribution is reduced to ₹2,700, resulting in a state subsidy of ₹18,900. For a 2kW system costing ₹1,07,200, general category families will contribute ₹10,720, while SC/ST families will contribute ₹5,360. The state expects over 300,000 families to benefit from this measure.
