India to release AI regulation consultation paper within one month

India's Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that the government will release a consultation paper on artificial intelligence (AI) regulations within the next month. The document is intended to establish a foundational framework for future AI governance in the country.

The upcoming regulatory blueprint will prioritize AI safety and security, with a specific focus on mitigating the societal risks posed by deepfakes and misinformation. Vaishnaw described deepfakes as a “nuisance which can cause huge problems in society,” noting their ability to set wrong narratives and mislead the public.

Rather than relying solely on legislation, the government aims to implement a “techno-legal solution” that involves active participation from industry stakeholders. The minister emphasized that the technology industry must take primary responsibility for addressing risks such as cybersecurity, user harm, and algorithmic bias. Additionally, the framework will address skilling to ensure the workforce is prepared for advancing AI technologies.
