Gujarat High Court grants parole to Bilkis Bano case convict

The Gujarat High Court has granted a seven-day parole to Radheshyam Shah, one of the eleven convicts sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes committed during the 2002 Bilkis Bano case. Justice Sanjeev J Thaker approved the temporary release, citing the economic condition of the convict's family as a primary reason for exercising judicial discretion.

Shah is required to furnish a personal bond of Rs 10,000 and must report to the nearest police station on the third and fifth days of his release. The court emphasized that this parole is a conditional temporary release and does not constitute a remission of his sentence.

The convicts in this case were originally sentenced in 2008 for murder and gang rape during the 2002 communal riots in Gujarat. While the Gujarat government had previously granted remission to the eleven convicts in 2022, the Supreme Court of India annulled those orders in January 2024, directing the convicts to return to prison.
