Gujarat High Court rejects Asaram's temporary bail plea
The Gujarat High Court has rejected a plea by self-styled godman Asaram for 20 days of temporary bail. Asaram, who is currently serving life sentences for rape, sought the release on humanitarian grounds to visit his 83-year-old wife, who was receiving treatment at a hospital in Ahmedabad.
A division bench consisting of Justices Gita Gopi and LS Pirzada reviewed medical reports and police findings. The court noted that Asaram’s wife had responded well to treatment and that doctors expected her to be discharged within two to three days. Consequently, the bench determined there was no medical urgency to warrant his release from Jodhpur Jail.
While denying the bail, the court permitted Asaram to seek permission from jail authorities to communicate with his wife via video conferencing.
