Gujarat implements administrative reform for tribal development

The Gujarat government has introduced an administrative reform to accelerate social and economic development for primitive tribal communities, specifically targeting the Padhar and Siddi families living in non-tribal districts. Under the ‘Mukhyamantri Adimjuth Sarvangi Utkarsh Yojana’, Class-I officers from the Tribal Development Department will be appointed as Member Secretaries of district-level committees.

Starting from the 2026-27 financial year, the Assistant Commissioner (Class-I) of Tribal Development in Ahmedabad will serve as Member Secretary for Ahmedabad and Surendranagar. Meanwhile, the Assistant Commissioner in Rajkot will hold the role for Gir Somnath and Junagadh. This new structure replaces the previous system where Deputy District Development Officers handled these duties as an additional charge.

The reform aims to close administrative gaps found in non-traditional tribal areas, where dedicated Project Administrator offices were previously unavailable. By establishing a more focused mechanism, the government intends to improve the planning, monitoring, and implementation of development works for scattered settlements.
