Gujarat, India: Heavy rains trigger port warnings and mass evacuations
The India Meteorological Department issued Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 for Veraval Port as squally weather, heavy rain and strong winds moved across Gujarat's Saurashtra region. Fishermen were warned to stay ashore while the monsoon surge caused widespread flooding.
In Gir Somnath district, intense rainfall caused the Rupen River to breach its embankment, flooding villages and prompting a coordinated rescue effort. More than 250 residents were evacuated from Gangda village to schools and an ashram, with additional relief provided for displaced families. Separate teams rescued four people trapped in a flooded house in Sultanpur village. Rough sea conditions also forced the Indian Coast Guard to rescue four fishermen whose boat broke free from its anchor.
Emergency personnel from the district administration, State Disaster Response Force and local authorities continued to monitor the situation and remain on alert as heavy rain persisted.
