Gujarat launches India's first sports genomics programme

Gujarat has launched India’s first state-level Sports Genomics Programme to enhance athlete development through scientific analysis. Implemented by the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC) under the Department of Science and Technology, the initiative aims to combine genomics with sports science, physiology, and nutrition to create an evidence-based approach to talent identification.

The programme utilizes whole-genome sequencing to study genetic variations linked to athletic traits such as endurance, power, muscle composition, metabolism, recovery, and injury susceptibility. This scientific profiling is intended to help identify and prepare athletes for national and international competition, specifically in preparation for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

GBRC scientists have already begun collecting samples, starting with tennis players from the Gujarat State Tennis Association. The next phase will involve athletes from the Vijayi Bharat Foundation participating in archery, fencing, judo, and shooting. The state aims to collect 2,000 samples this year, with a target of approximately 10,000 samples over the next five years.
