Gujarat heavy rain alerts trigger school closures, hoarding removals and disaster response
The India Meteorological Department issued a Red Alert for 13 districts in Gujarat and an Orange Alert for seven others, warning of extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds. In response, schools and colleges in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Anand and Kheda were closed on July 31, and Gandhinagar district announced a holiday on August 1 for all schools, colleges and Anganwadi centres. Authorities removed more than 200 large hoardings and banners in Gandhinagar as a precautionary measure. The State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) has sent over 286.4 crore SMS alerts through the SACHET system and mobilised 50 disaster‑response teams (17 NDRF and 33 SDRF) across the state. Rapid Response Teams (44) and field teams (174) were deployed for rescue, health screening and water‑chlorination. Over 150 people were evacuated from low‑lying areas of Rajpipla town in Narmada district, and three labourers died after their vehicle contacted a live overhead electric wire in Navsari district. Similar safety actions were taken in neighbouring Rajasthan, where orange alerts were issued and NDRF teams recalled.
