Gujarat police accused of public flogging murder suspect in Bhavnagar

Gujarat police in Bhavnagar are facing allegations of custodial torture and public humiliation after a video surfaced showing the public flogging of a murder suspect. Faizal Lakhani, who was arrested for the alleged murder of his live-in partner, Kajal Ben, was reportedly tied with ropes and struck repeatedly with sticks and batons during a crime scene reconstruction at an ST bus stand.

The People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has issued a formal legal notice to senior state officials, including the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, demanding disciplinary action. The rights group characterized the incident as “barbaric and unconstitutional violence” that violates Supreme Court jurisprudence regarding the treatment of detainees.

Nilambaug Police Station Inspector D. P. Undadkat defended the officers' actions, stating the flogging was intended to send a strong message to criminals and restore public faith in law enforcement following the brutal nature of the alleged murder. Undadkat claimed the measure was necessary to ensure that crimes against women are taken seriously. Following the incident, Lakhani was produced before a court and sent to judicial custody.
