Gujarat Police expands CCTV surveillance network via public participation

Gujarat State Police Chief Gyanendra Singh Malik has launched an initiative to expand the state's CCTV surveillance network through active public participation. The strategy aims to strengthen crime prevention and detection by encouraging citizens, residential societies, and trade associations to voluntarily install cameras in strategic locations.

The initiative builds on a successful model implemented in Ahmedabad, where over 24,000 cameras were installed between 2024 and 2026 with the support of local residents and organizations. While more than 3.88 lakh private cameras are currently operational across Gujarat, officials noted gaps in coverage regarding public roads, parking areas, and the entry and exit points of residential complexes.

To address these gaps, Malik has directed City Police Commissioners and District Superintendents of Police to engage directly with local communities. Police officials are recommending the use of high-resolution cameras (4 megapixels or higher) with night vision and sufficient storage capacity to ensure effective surveillance and usable footage for investigations.
