Gujarat political parties under investigation for alleged Rs 1,143 crore donation racket

Gujarat police have registered criminal cases against the Bharatiya National Janata Dal (BNJD) and several office-bearers following allegations of a massive bogus political donation racket. The scheme reportedly involved Rs 1,143.85 crore and 56,238 donors between the 2019-20 and 2024-25 financial years. The Income Tax Department estimates this arrangement caused a direct tax loss of approximately Rs 343 crore to the exchequer.

According to investigators, taxpayers transferred funds to the party via banking channels to claim tax deductions. These funds were then allegedly moved to intermediary firms through fake invoices for commodities like grains and pulses. After deducting commissions of 2% to 10%, the remaining cash was reportedly returned to the original donors through hawala networks and Angadiya channels.

In addition to the BNJD case, authorities are investigating two other complaints involving different political parties. These include allegations against the Garib Kalyan Party regarding Rs 206.76 crore in bogus donations, and another complaint involving Rs 519 crore. The Ahmedabad CID Crime is leading the investigations into these accommodation entry operations.
