Gujarat to install rooftop solar on 15,000 government buildings

The Gujarat government has announced a major expansion of its rooftop solar programme, planning to install solar systems on 15,000 additional government buildings during the 2026-27 period. This initiative is expected to add approximately 65 MW of renewable energy capacity, bringing the programme's cumulative total to over 160 MW.

Implemented by the Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA) under the Climate Change Department, the project aims to reduce reliance on conventional electricity, lower government expenditure, and decrease pollution. As of March 2026, the programme had already equipped 6,014 buildings with a combined capacity of 95 MW.

The state has earmarked ₹314 crore for the 2026-27 expansion. This budget includes ₹278 crore for general government buildings, ₹33 crore for the Tribal Development Department, and ₹3 crore for the Social Justice and Empowerment Department. The state provides 100 per cent capital-cost support for these installations through the Climate Change Department's annual budget.
