Karnataka’s Gulbarga Tur Dal exported to Maldives
A one-metric-tonne consignment of Gulbarga Tur Dal, a premium lentil variety from Karnataka, India, has been exported to the Maldives. The shipment was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and transported by sea.
The product holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, which it received in 2019 for its distinctive quality and taste associated with the Kalaburagi region. This export initiative aims to connect Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) with international markets and expand the global presence of India’s specialty agricultural products.
The export-oriented value chain provides significant financial benefits to local producers. While the domestic market price for the dal is approximately ₹60 per kilogram, farmers are receiving ₹82 per kilogram through this export channel, representing a price increase of over 30 percent. The shipment was handled by Mysuru-based Silken Global Exports and Imports through an FPO-led brand.
