Gulf Football Association committee sets Khaleeji 27 qualification rules

The Gulf Football Association's competitions committee held its fourth meeting in Jeddah, chaired by Dr. Khaled bin Abdulaziz bin Muqrin, to discuss the second round of the Khaleeji 27 tournament. The tournament, hosted by Saudi Arabia from September 23 to October 6, 2026, features eight national teams competing in 15 matches.

The committee reviewed reports from match observers regarding the fourth and fifth matches, which included fixtures between Iraq and Kuwait, as well as Saudi Arabia and Oman. Discussions also covered training schedules and the use of approved training facilities to ensure technical programs remain on track.

Crucially, the committee outlined the tie-breaking mechanisms for determining semi-final qualifiers. Teams will be ranked by total points. If points are equal, ranking will be decided by head-to-head points, head-to-head goal difference, and head-to-head goals scored. If a tie persists, the committee will look at overall goal difference and goals scored in the tournament. In specific scenarios where tied teams played each other in their final match, a penalty shootout may be used. Finally, disciplinary points from yellow and red cards will serve as a tie-breaker, followed by a draw if necessary.
