Gum disease linked to increased osteoporosis and type‑2 diabetes risk
Recent research indicates that chronic gum disease (periodontitis) may have systemic health effects beyond the mouth. A study by Griffith University and Nanjing University, published in npj Biofilms and Microbiomes, found that gum inflammation in mice altered the gut microbiome, weakened the gut barrier and accelerated bone loss, suggesting a possible link between periodontitis and osteoporosis.
A separate large‑scale analysis of more than 300,000 adults across 16 countries, reported in The Lancet Public Health, showed that people with periodontitis have an 18‑25 % higher chance of developing type 2 diabetes, while those who have lost all their teeth face a 30 % higher risk. The researchers attribute the association to chronic inflammation that can promote insulin resistance, and note a bidirectional relationship where diabetes also worsens gum health. Both studies highlight the potential for dentists to play a role in early detection and management of these systemic conditions.
