South Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jung-kwan announced that negotiations for a major investment project in the United States are nearing a final agreement. Following a business trip to the U.S., Kim stated that while several issues remain, the government aims to reach a final settlement within the week through upcoming video conferences.

A primary point of contention involves the investment structure. South Korea is proposing an ‘umbrella-type special purpose vehicle (SPV)’ model, which would allow excess profits from certain projects to offset losses in others. Conversely, the U.S. side reportedly prefers a structure where profits are settled on a project-by-project basis.

Potential candidate projects for this strategic investment include gas-fired power plant construction in Texas, large-scale nuclear power projects, and participation in the Alaska liquefied natural gas (LNG) project. Kim emphasized that the total strategic investment will adhere to the previously agreed limits of $200 billion in total and $20 billion annually, ensuring that the scale does not exceed the established cap.
