South Korean regional policies address agriculture and local economy
Various regional initiatives in South Korea are focusing on agricultural stability, local economic growth, and technological commercialization.
In Gyeongbuk, Kyungpook National University has launched a project to commercialize eight high-potential research tasks, including anti-cancer drug development and anti-obesity research, with an investment of 150 million won to bridge the gap between research and market entry.
In Gyeonggi Province, discussions are underway to secure continued funding for the eco-friendly agricultural products distribution project for military meals in border areas, which supports both soldier nutrition and farmer income. Meanwhile, in Imsil County, local council members are pushing for policies to increase the stay of tourists and ensure public construction contracts benefit local businesses.
On a national regulatory level, amendments to the Act on the Promotion of Exchange between Urban and Rural Areas will take effect in October 2027. The changes aim to lower entry barriers for rural homestay businesses while strengthening oversight to prevent criminal operators and unfair pricing. Additionally, legislative efforts are being made to address grievances in the fishing and farming sectors, including improving insurance compensation speeds and ensuring fair distribution channels.
