Gumi targets global leadership in Physical AI and robotics

Gumi is positioning itself as a global hub for Physical AI and advanced manufacturing following the South Korean government's selection of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region as a site for four key growth engines: AI robotics, semiconductor materials and components, secondary batteries, and future mobility.

To support this transition, Gyeongbuk Provincial Council member Kim Il-su has proposed transforming Gumi into a ‘Physical AI Test City.’ This initiative aims to open factories and logistics sites as large-scale demonstration spaces, supported by regulatory exemptions and specialized investment funds to attract domestic and international companies.

Local efforts are already underway, including a 19 trillion won investment plan by Samsung Electronics and Samsung SDS to establish humanoid robot production systems and AI data centers in the region. Additionally, the city has rebranded its Robot Vocational Innovation Center to the ‘Robot AI Education Innovation Center’ to focus on training specialized talent in generative AI, autonomous manufacturing, and Physical AI to meet evolving industrial demands.
