Gumi to become global quantum computing manufacturing hub
Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gumi City have entered into a strategic partnership to establish Gumi as a global manufacturing hub for the quantum computing supply chain. A four-party memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed in Maryland, USA, involving global quantum leader IonQ, domestic firm SDT, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Gumi City.
The collaboration focuses on the testing, packaging, and assembly of quantum components. By leveraging Gumi’s existing expertise in electronics, semiconductors, and precision manufacturing, the initiative aims to transition the region from research-oriented activities to high-value hardware production. The goal is to create a ‘quantum system foundry’ with a planned scale of approximately 75 billion KRW to produce essential components and equipment.
IonQ and SDT will work with local companies and universities to identify specific manufacturing tasks. While the agreement does not yet guarantee specific production volumes or items, Gumi City is preparing to finalize land acquisitions and investment agreements for factory sites by the end of the year. The project seeks to produce high-value quantum computers, which can cost between 50 billion and 100 billion KRW per unit.
