Sinaloa, Mexico faces escalating cartel conflict and violent crimes

Los Chapitos, the sons of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, remain among the most wanted criminals by U.S. and Mexican authorities. After the capture of their father and the internal split of the Sinaloa Cartel, they now lead a faction opposed by the Mayiza group headed by Ismael Zambada Sicairos. Their rivalry has sparked a broader gang war, including a brief alliance with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) before recent leadership changes in that group.

In a separate case, the skeletal remains discovered on 18 June near the Black Bridge (Puente Negro) in Culiacán were identified as those of Jesús Octavio Cázares Morán, a 56‑year‑old security guard who vanished on 22 January. DNA testing confirmed the identity after 147 days of disappearance, and the remains have been released to his family.

Security forces in the Los Ángeles sector of Culiacán also detained a civilian carrying a cache of weapons and explosives. The seizure included one short‑firearm, two long‑guns, multiple magazines, a stolen 2022 Mazda CX‑5, and a container with 50 improvised explosive devices. The detainee has been transferred to the Federal Prosecutor's Office for investigation.

Violent attacks continued with three motorcyclists shot dead in separate incidents in Culiacán and Navolato. Victims identified as Enrique "N" (35) and Juan Pablo "N" (30) were killed near the Cruz Roja base and on Carlos Chávez Street, respectively. Police investigations are ongoing, and no arrests have been reported.
