Gundlach Bundschu winery files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

Gundlach Bundschu, one of California’s oldest continually operating wineries, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Founded in 1858 in Sonoma County, the sixth-generation family-owned business is seeking to restructure its finances and potentially secure new investment.

The filing follows a period of significant financial strain attributed to a debt-financed acquisition in February 2020. This acquisition led to the creation of Abbott's Passage, a second property that closed earlier this year due to declining demand within the wine industry and challenges in building brand momentum.

Owners Jeff and Katie Bundschu stated that the winery and its tasting rooms will remain open throughout the restructuring process. The company aims to continue its scheduled events and operations while navigating the post-pandemic economic landscape.
