Jordan: Terrorist attack on Karak church leaves nine dead

A terrorist attack targeting a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hmoud, located in the Karak governorate, has resulted in at least nine deaths and approximately 40 injuries. The shooting occurred on Friday, October 23, 2026, during a funeral service. Witnesses reported that three armed assailants—two with handguns and one with a semi-automatic rifle—opened fire on the congregation, which included between 150 and 200 people.

King Abdullah II has condemned the incident as a terrorist act and vowed that the perpetrators will face the harshest penalties. He chaired a National Security Council meeting to discuss the attack and ordered a comprehensive security assessment to enhance future readiness. Prime Minister Jafar Hassan declared a three-day period of national mourning and emphasized that combating extremism is a battle of awareness and thought.

Security forces are currently conducting a manhunt for the gunmen. While the Ministry of Interior described the attackers as a group of extremists, no specific organization has claimed responsibility for the massacre. In response to the heightened threat, the U.S. Embassy in Amman has increased security measures around embassies, shopping centers, and other key locations, advising American citizens to exercise caution.
