Gunther Fehlinger-Jahn proposes 100 km/h EU speed limit

Gunther Fehlinger-Jahn, an Austrian political activist and president of the Austrian Committee for NATO Enlargement, has proposed a mandatory European-wide speed limit of 100 km/h for all internal combustion engine vehicles.

Fehlinger-Jahn argues that a unified limit would simultaneously address three major challenges: energy dependency, climate responsibility, and road safety. He suggests that because aerodynamic drag increases exponentially with speed, limiting vehicles to 100 km/h could reduce fuel consumption on highways by 20% to 30%.

Proponents of the measure claim it would save billions of euros, reduce exposure to energy shocks, and decrease the amount of money flowing to politically unstable or hostile regimes through fuel imports. Additionally, the proposal aims to simplify regulatory frameworks across the European Union and improve road safety by reducing fatal accidents and serious injuries.
