Gunung Ungaran geothermal plant development to boost economy and reduce emissions

The development of the Gunung Ungaran Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) is expected to provide environmental benefits and create economic opportunities for local communities in Indonesia.

Yoga Aribowo, a geological engineering academic at Diponegoro University, noted that geothermal energy maintains relatively low emissions. Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are estimated at approximately 100 grams per kilowatt hour (kWh), while hydrogen sulfide (H2S) emissions remain below 1 gram per kWh. The process utilizes steam and hot water from reservoirs located thousands of meters below the surface, which is distinct from shallow groundwater used in wells. To ensure sustainability, the geothermal fluids are returned to the reservoir through a reinjection process.

Beyond environmental impacts, the project is anticipated to stimulate the local economy by creating direct and indirect employment. This development may encourage the growth of local businesses, such as food stalls, shops, transportation services, and lodging to support the workforce and project activities.
