Gunung Ungaran geothermal project faces local opposition

Central Java officials and lawmakers are addressing public opposition to a proposed geothermal energy project in the Gunung Ungaran area. The project, designated as a National Strategic Project, has received permit recommendations from the central government through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM).

Central Java Deputy Governor Taj Yasin Maimoen stated that the provincial government is prepared to facilitate dialogue between the community and the government to address concerns regarding environmental impacts and safety. He emphasized that while the national policy focuses on green energy, renewable energy development must not damage local ecosystems or community welfare.

Legislators have raised specific concerns regarding the project's impact on water resources. Muhammad Farchan, a member of the Central Java DPRD and former director of the Semarang water utility (PDAM), noted that Gunung Ungaran is a vital source of drinking water for Semarang City. He cautioned that the sustainability of these water sources must be a primary consideration during the development process.
