Gunung Ungaran geothermal project remains in study phase amid local concerns

PT PLN (Persero) has clarified that the proposed development of the Gunung Ungaran Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) in Central Java is currently in the planning and feasibility study stage. The company emphasized that the project has not yet entered the construction or drilling phases, responding to concerns from the local community and the Semarang Regency Government.

PLN stated that its studies encompass technical aspects as well as safety, environmental impact, social factors, spatial planning, and the preservation of cultural heritage. The company noted that community input and the protection of local water sources are critical components of the ongoing assessment.

Concurrently, members of the Central Java Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) have called for a re-evaluation of the project. Concerns raised by officials and residents include potential damage to the environment, the disruption of vital water sources, and threats to local biodiversity, such as the endangered Javan Hawk-eagle. Additionally, there are fears that the project could impact the Gedong Songo Temple complex, a significant historical site from the 8th-9th century.
