Gunungkidul increases health budget and addresses doctor shortages
The Gunungkidul Regency Government is increasing its budget by Rp5.5 billion to reactivate BPJS Kesehatan health insurance for approximately 56,000 underprivileged residents. This additional funding brings the total allocation for health insurance premiums to Rp47.5 billion, following the deactivation of central government-funded memberships earlier this year.
Simultaneously, health facilities in Gunungkidul are facing a shortage of specialist doctors. Efforts to recruit specialists through civil servant (CPNS) openings have seen limited success, with only one out of eleven positions filled in recent recruitment cycles. Local health officials suggest that geographic distance may be a deterrent for applicants.
To address the staffing gap, the Gunungkidul Health Office is exploring partnerships with universities, such as Diponegoro University, to place medical residents in the region to assist with healthcare services.
