Guoxing Township hosts delayed Koxinga worship ceremony and 921 earthquake memorial

Guoxing Township in Nantou County recently hosted the 115th National Ceremony of Worship for Koxinga, a major religious event that was delayed for 27 years. Originally scheduled for 1999, the ceremony was postponed due to the devastating 921 earthquake. The event brought together approximately 3,000 participants from over 70 temples across Taiwan, represented by the Taiwan Koxinga Worship United Association.

In addition to the religious rites, the festivities included cultural forums, folk performances, and a local market showcasing Guoxing’s agricultural products, such as coffee, strawberries, and citrus. During the ceremony, the hosting rights for the next grand event were officially transferred to the Beipu Fusheng Temple in Hualien.

To commemorate the 27th anniversary of the 921 earthquake, local authorities also organized a memorial walk titled ‘Remembering 921: Using Love to Report Peace.’ The walk, which included students and local residents, focused on life education, disaster prevention, and the history of post-earthquake reconstruction. The event highlighted the resilience of the Nantou community and the development of local industries, such as Guoxing coffee, as part of regional revitalization efforts.
