Gupta family mansions in Johannesburg return to market

Two luxury mansions in the wealthy Saxonwold neighborhood of Johannesburg have been relisted for sale. The properties are linked to Atul, Rajesh, and Ajay Gupta, businessmen central to South Africa’s state capture scandal involving alleged corruption and influence over government contracts.

The seven-bedroom mansion includes an indoor swimming pool, a mini cricket pitch, and a garden with endangered cycad plants. The adjacent 11-bedroom property features a cinema lounge, a beauty parlour, and a rooftop terrace.

Finding buyers has proven difficult due to the properties' poor condition and the stigma associated with the Gupta name. A previous attempt to sell the mansions and a nearby three-bedroom house fell through last year at a price approximately 46% below their municipal valuation.

The properties are owned by Confident Concept Pty Ltd, which entered business rescue in 2018. Proceeds from the sale are intended to settle claims from creditors.
