Gupta-linked companies convicted in South African mine fraud case
The South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg has convicted several companies and individuals linked to the Gupta family for fraud and money laundering. The case involved the unlawful diversion of funds intended for the environmental rehabilitation of two coal mines in Mpumalanga.
Specifically, the court found Ronica Ragavan, Pushapaveni Ugeshni Govender, Optimum Coal Mine (Pty) Ltd, Koornfontein Mines (Pty) Ltd, and Tegeta Exploration and Resources (Pty) Ltd guilty of diverting R7.5 million from the Optimum Mine Rehabilitation Trust and R100 million from the Koornfontein Rehabilitation Trust.
Evidence presented during the trial indicated that funds meant for repairing environmental damage caused by mining operations were redirected to pay mining contractors and other third parties. The convictions were confirmed by the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) and the National Director of Public Prosecutions.
