Gurigo mortuary remains unused for six years in Ghana

A completed mortuary facility in Gurigo, located within Ghana’s Bongo District, has remained unused for over six years despite being fully constructed and connected to electricity. The neglect of the facility has forced bereaved families in the region to travel to Bolgatanga for mortuary services, creating significant financial and logistical burdens.

According to Nasiru Atibire, the Assembly Member for the Gurigo Electoral Area, the mortuary was originally part of a larger plan to relocate the Bongo District Hospital to Gurigo. While the hospital project was stalled due to land disputes between landowners and the Bongo District Assembly, the mortuary construction was already finished. Although the land dispute has since been resolved, authorities have reportedly lost interest in operationalizing the facility.

Community leaders and residents have expressed concerns that the building will deteriorate if urgent action is not taken. Mr. Atibire has appealed to the Bongo District Assembly, the District Chief Executive, and the Member of Parliament to inspect the site, procure necessary equipment, and officially open the facility for public use.
