Guru Dutt: The legendary director who became a cinema icon

On the anniversary of his death, the legacy of legendary Indian director and actor Guru Dutt is being commemorated. Although he is celebrated as a superstar of Hindi cinema, his primary professional ambition was directing rather than acting.

Dutt’s transition to acting in major roles occurred largely due to circumstances involving other actors. In the 1957 classic ‘Pyaasa’, he played the role of Vijay, a struggling poet, after Dilip Kumar declined the part due to commitments to the film ‘Devdas’. His portrayal of emotional struggle and loneliness in ‘Pyaasa’ became a defining moment in his career.

He also received significant acclaim for his performance as Bhootnath in the 1962 film ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’, which featured Meena Kumari and Waheeda Rehman. Dutt passed away on October 10, 1964, at the age of 39, leaving behind a cinematic style characterized by unique storytelling and camera work that continues to inspire filmmakers.
