Guryong Village fire in Seoul displaces over 100 residents

A major fire broke out in Guryong Village, a makeshift settlement in the Gangnam district of Seoul, on the afternoon of October 27. The blaze, which originated in the village's second district, spread rapidly through residential areas and toward the nearby Guryongsan mountain due to strong winds and the presence of highly flammable materials like plywood, vinyl, and insulation.

Firefighting efforts lasted approximately 13 hours, with authorities deploying 232 personnel, 110 pieces of equipment, and six helicopters. The operation faced challenges including water shortages and difficult nighttime conditions. The fire was fully extinguished by 4:39 AM on October 28.

The fire affected between 77 and 91 households, leaving approximately 107 to 127 residents displaced. One woman in her 30s sustained minor leg injuries, but no fatalities were reported. Displaced residents are currently staying in temporary shelters at local middle school gymnasiums and nearby accommodations.

Authorities, including police and the Korea Electrical Safety Corporation, have begun a joint investigation to determine the cause of the fire. The incident has renewed concerns regarding the structural fire risks in the settlement, which is slated for redevelopment to make way for new housing.
