Gus Van Sant returns with true crime thriller ‘Refém Por um Fio’
Director Gus Van Sant returns to cinema with the film ‘Refém Por um Fio’ (Dead Man’s Line), marking his first release after a seven-year hiatus. The suspense thriller is based on a real 1977 incident in Indianapolis, where real estate developer Tony Kiritsis kidnapped the son of a mortgage company executive, Richard Hall, after feeling financially wronged.
Kiritsis utilized a ‘dead man’s wire’ device, attaching a weapon to the hostage's neck to prevent police intervention during the 60-hour standoff. The film features a cast including Bill Skarsgård as Kiritsis, Al Pacino, Colman Domingo, and Dacre Montgomery. The production utilizes a raw aesthetic and fragmented editing to explore multiple perspectives, including those of the victim, the kidnapper, the father, and the media.
The soundtrack, composed by Danny Elfman, incorporates 1970s soul, funk, and rock tracks from artists such as Donna Summer, Roberta Flack, and Gil Scott-Heron.
