Guselkumab approved for reimbursement in Italy for Crohn's and colitis

Johnson & Johnson's Il-23 selective inhibitor, guselkumab (Tremfya), has received approval for reimbursement in Italy for two new therapeutic indications. The drug is authorized for adult patients with moderate to severe active ulcerative colitis and moderate to severe active Crohn's disease, specifically for those who have had an inadequate response or intolerance to conventional or biological therapies.

In Italy, the administration involves intravenous use during the induction phase and subcutaneous use for maintenance in ulcerative colitis patients. For Crohn's disease, guselkumab can be administered both intravenously and subcutaneously during induction, followed by subcutaneous maintenance.

Clinical data presented at the ACG 2026 meeting indicates that 74 percent of patients treated with Tremfya for Crohn's disease remained on the therapy after three years. In Italy, an estimated 250,000 people live with inflammatory bowel diseases, a condition that has seen an 85 percent increase in prevalence over the last 30 years.
