Gustaf Skarsgård begins filming horror debut ‘The Cannibal’

Production has commenced on ‘The Cannibal’, the directorial debut of actor Gustaf Skarsgård. The psychological horror film is currently filming on the Swedish island of Fårö, with authorized access to the estate of legendary filmmaker Ingmar Bergman, before moving to western Sweden.

Written by Peter Birro, the screenplay follows a screenwriter named David, played by Ardalan Esmaili, who becomes consumed by a nightmarish encounter with Bergman, portrayed by Claes Ljungmark. The story explores the protagonist's fixation on the filmmaker and the cinematic language associated with Bergman's legacy.

Described as a blend of homage and sacrilege, the film is scheduled for a 2027 release in Swedish cinemas through Scanbox.
