Gustav Weißkopf: The disputed pioneer of powered flight

The historical debate regarding whether Gustav Weißkopf or the Wright brothers achieved the first powered flight continues to gain attention on the 125th anniversary of Weißkopf's alleged milestone.

Records suggest that Weißkopf, a German-born inventor, may have successfully flown his “Model 21” aircraft in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on August 14, 1901. This would predate the Wright brothers' successful flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, by approximately two years.

While some experts and publications, such as the aviation authority “Jane's,” have acknowledged that Weißkopf may have flown before the Wright brothers, major institutions remain skeptical. The Smithsonian in Washington and the Deutsches Museum in Munich do not officially recognize his achievement, citing a lack of verifiable evidence and the disappearance of his aircraft shortly after the reported flight.
