Gustavo Cerati and Soda Stereo's impact on Rock en español

The musical legacy of Gustavo Cerati and his band Soda Stereo remains a cornerstone of Rock en español. Cerati, born in Buenos Aires in 1959, became a major icon through his work with Soda Stereo and his subsequent solo career.

Soda Stereo's debut self-titled album, released in 1984, introduced a new aesthetic to the genre by blending new wave, British ska, and pop. Produced by Federico Moura, the album featured tracks such as ‘Dietético’ and ‘Trátame suavemente’. The band achieved rapid success, earning platinum status in Argentina and double platinum in Chile and Peru.

Throughout their career, the group produced several influential albums, including ‘Signos’ (1986) and ‘Doble Vida’ (1988), featuring hits like ‘Persiana americana’ and ‘En la Ciudad de la Furia’. Their 1990 album ‘Animal’ produced the classic ‘De Música Ligera’, a song famously associated with Cerati’s farewell phrase, ‘Gracias Totales’.
