Gustavo Dudamel begins tenure as New York Philharmonic music director
Gustavo Dudamel has officially commenced his tenure as the music and creative director of the New York Philharmonic. His leadership era began with a series of high-profile performances across Manhattan, including a large-scale event at Radio City Music Hall and a commemorative concert at the World Trade Center.
His first subscription concert at David Geffen Hall featured a program centered on themes of resilience and human spirit. The performance included a revival of John Adams’s ‘On the Transmigration of Souls’, a work inspired by the September 11 attacks, marking its first New York performance since 2002. The program also featured the world premiere of ‘Invisible House’ by Zosha Di Castri and Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony.
Observers noted a renewed sense of enthusiasm and energy within the orchestra during these initial performances, part of a broader promotional campaign across the city signaling a new chapter for the institution.
