Liga de Quito names Gustavo Álvarez as new head coach
Liga de Quito announced on 24 July 2026 that Argentine Gustavo Álvarez, 53, has been appointed as the club’s head coach, signing a contract that runs until 31 December 2027. He replaces Brazilian Tiago Nunes, who left after a series of poor results.
Álvarez arrives with a record that includes the 2023 Chilean Primera División title, the 2024 Copa Chile and the 2025 Supercopa, all won with Universidad de Chile. His résumé also features spells at San Lorenzo, Huachipato, Patronato, Aldosivi, Temperley and several Peruvian clubs. During his presentation he said, “It is impossible not to know Liga de Quito in the continent – it is a prestigious institution,” and the club greeted him with the slogan “¡Bienvenido, profe Gustavo Álvarez, al club universitario más ganador del continente!”
The coaching staff will be completed by assistants Óscar Limia and Marcelo Figueroa. Álvarez will take charge of Liga de Quito’s Liga Pro and Copa Libertadores campaigns, although Patricio Hurtado will manage the immediate Liga Pro match against Barcelona SC on 26 July 2026 due to Álvarez’s late arrival.
