Gustavo Petro alleges U.S. interference in drug enforcement

Former Colombian President Gustavo Petro has issued a critical assessment of his administration's military operations against drug trafficking leaders. Petro reported that 25 airstrikes intended to target high-level criminal bosses failed to achieve their objectives, noting that targets frequently vacated locations moments before impact. He expressed distrust in military intelligence reports, suggesting possible internal leaks.

Petro further alleged that certain sectors of the United States government may have intentionally hindered the capture of major drug lords to undermine his political movement. He claimed that these actors viewed the success of his "progressivism" as a risk to their interests, though he provided no evidence for this assertion while maintaining that anti-narcotics cooperation with Washington remained active.

In a separate development regarding his "Total Peace" policy, the government has begun dismantling certain aspects of the initiative. This includes the transfer of former paramilitary leaders Carlos Mario Jiménez, alias ‘Macaco’, and Hernán Giraldo. These individuals had previously been designated as peace mediators, a move that drew significant criticism from oversight bodies due to their criminal histories.
