Father and Stepmother Arrested in Brazil Over 3‑Year‑Old's Death
Three‑year‑old Gustavo Veloso Feitosa died on 2 August 2024 in Palmas, Tocantins. The child’s father, lawyer Igor Gustavo Veloso de Sousa (33), and his partner Kathellen Moreira (23) were taken into preventive custody on 5 August (reported on 6 August) after police linked them to the homicide and torture of the boy.
A forensic examination ruled out drowning and identified multiple head, facial and intestinal injuries consistent with severe assault and torture, while sexual violence was later dismissed. The investigation is being handled by the Police Civil of Tocantins, Homicide and Protection of Persons division.
The Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil – Seccional Tocantins (OAB‑TO) suspended Veloso’s professional registration pending a disciplinary proceeding before the Tribunal of Ethics and Discipline. The boy’s mother, Sabrina da Silva Feitosa, posted a tribute video on social media after the arrests, and public demonstrations titled “Justiça por Gustavo” were organized in Palmas. Both suspects deny the accusations and their legal defence says they are cooperating with authorities.
