Gut health and the impact of ultra-processed foods on digestion

Medical experts are highlighting the connection between digestive health and systemic symptoms such as migraines, joint pain, bloating, and fatigue. Research, including work from Harvard Medical School, points to intestinal permeability, or ‘leaky gut syndrome,’ as a primary cause. This occurs when the tight junctions between intestinal cells fail, allowing undigested food particles and bacterial toxins to enter the bloodstream, triggering immune responses.

Additionally, gastroenterologists are warning against the frequent consumption of ultra-processed protein bars. While often marketed as healthy snacks, these products can contain ingredients that cause significant gastrointestinal distress. Specific culprits include added fibers like inulin, which can cause cramping and bloating, and sugar alcohols such as erythritol or sorbitol, which may lead to gas and diarrhea. Experts suggest that concentrated protein isolates combined with certain gums can also cause nausea and stomach discomfort.
