Gut health concerns linked to yogurt additives and food pairings

Recent nutritional insights highlight how certain yogurt additives and combinations can impact digestive health. While yogurt is generally beneficial due to protein, calcium, and beneficial bacteria, specific ingredients and food pairings may cause gastrointestinal distress.

Research published in Springer Nature, spanning ten years, suggests that carrageenan (E407), a thickening agent found in some yogurts, dairy desserts, and processed meats, may negatively affect the intestinal barrier and microbiota. Professor Robert Wagner warns that such disruptions could promote inflammation and increase the risk of autoimmune-related diseases.

Additionally, digestive issues like bloating can occur when yogurt is paired with high-FODMAP foods. For individuals with sensitivities such as IBS or SIBO, combining yogurt with high amounts of fructose (honey, apples, mangoes), fructans (garlic, onions, inulin-rich granola), or polyols (sorbitol, xylitol) can lead to excessive fermentation in the large intestine.
